Synthesis, Characterization, and Device Integration of Functional Nanoparticles

Functional nanoparticles and their devices have gained substantial interest to current industry and also emerging technology. Development of nanoparticle suspensions using the concept of material-by-design is useful. To successfully implement the design, the properties of nanoparticles have to be presented precisely and accurately. On that basis, correlations between material properties in designs can be meaningful to their formulation chemistry.
Our work starts from developing suitable characterization methods, including: (1) establishment of state of the art particle size measurement system (e.g., electrospray differential mobility analysis), and (2) incorporation of multiple spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Using complementary characterization, we are able to quantify the properties of nanoparticles, such as physical size, molecular adsorption, and the stability of nanoparticles. With the support of accurate and traceable characterization approaches, we establish the capability of generating high purity, monodisperse colloidal and aerosolized nanoparticles and integrating them for device applications. Our work demonstrates a proof of concept of systematic synthesis, characterization, and device Integration for a variety of nanoparticle-manufactured products with traceability in material properties.
