Artificial photosynthesis is a chemical process that captures and stores the energy from sunlight in a chemical fuel (a so called solar fuel). This renewable process requires the finely tuned combination of light absorption, charge separation and chemical catalysis, which is superbly coupled in natural photosynthesis but much less so by artificial systems. This presentation will summarise our recent progress in developing cross-disciplinary approaches to interface enzymes such as photosystem II and hydrogenases with nanostructured metal oxide electrodes and semiconductor materials to photosplit water as a sustainable route to the energy vector hydrogen.
