Assembling molecules into higher order structures by non-covalent interaction is key to emerge new functions and a complexity in chemistry and biology and the understanding of its mechanism is a ubiquitous interest over scientific disciplines. In this lecture, I focus on the usage of coordination bond as one of non-covalent interactions to produce assemblies of metal ions and organic molecules. In particular, I introduce a novel class of porous materials so-called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as examples. By controlling the assembly process, chemists are now able to control the size, shape and architecture of MOFs in multiscales, from the molecular level to micro-meter scale. I also talk about how we apply these scalable materials for cell biology and electronics.
