ABSTRACT

The structural similarity of 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid (FDCA) to terephthalic acid (TA) has made FDCA a popular bio-based alternative in the fabrication of plant-based soft drink bottles. Bio-resourced furanic compounds are synthesized via a chemical route while many bio-based building blocks are produced by fermentation. FDCA is a versatile bio-based building block synthesized by the catalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and its derivatives or directly from carbohydrates. Industrial efforts have focused on integrating FDCA synthesis into existing PTA production lines by applying the commonly known Amoco Mid-Century (MC) catalyst for aerobic oxidation of HMF in acetic acid. The current research focus is directed to identify efficient catalysts and processing conditions to prepare FDCA in an environmentally benign solvent such as water. Polyethylene-2,5-furandicarboxylate (PEF) has begun to emerge as a bio-based polyester with mechanical strength comparable to that of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) while simultaneously displaying excellent barrier properties. Potential applications of PEF for film, fibre and blown bottles have been explored and reported by various research groups. Dehydration of fructose in a 100 L reactor followed by oxidation of HMF to produce 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) in a 200 L autoclave were performed in our laboratories. Polymerization of dimethyl ester of FDCA and ethylene glycol resulted in obtaining high molecular weight polyethylene furandicarboxylate (PEF) with superior barrier properties due to rigid structure of furan moiety. Synthetic approach to improve melt strength was achieved to extend the applications of PEF and related polymers.
