Photoautotrophic cultivation of microalgae is considered the most promising platform for CO2 capture and re-utilization as the microalgal biomass converted from bio-fixation of CO2 can be used as feedstock/raw materials for biofuel and bio-based chemicals production. The microalgae team established based on Taiwan's NEP-II project has developed breakthrough technologies to improve and integrate the currently available technologies and make them more feasible for practical applications. The major research directions include developing microalgae mutants with improved performance, developing commercial scale outdoor microalgae cultivation system using industrial flue gas for CO2 fixation, developing effective methods for the production of microalgae-based biofuels and high-value products, establishing efficient cell disruption and oil extraction machine for industrialized microalgal biorefineries, and utilizing CO2-absorbing wastewaters for simultaneous microalgae cultivation and wastewater treatment. Our recent research progress will be presented. The challenges encountered during the development of microalgae-based biorefinery will also be discussed. Some examples of commercialization of our technology will be given.
