Bistable Switches in Gene Regulation
In nature, the decision of binary fate is one of the most important processes of gene regulation. The expression of gene is inherently noisy and its reflection at protein level is a distribution. A bimodal distribution in population results from cells featured with bistable switches. Such a bistable system exhibits two stable steady states, but mostly only one of the two states is profitable. We aim to investigate the connection between single cell bistability and population bimodal distribution. We have shown that it is possible, with manipulation of stochasticity, to increase the portion of cells at desired state for the reaction network which is one of the canonical gene regulatory networks with bistability.
