Role of platelets and platelet microvesicles in regenerative medicine, cell therapy, and diseases

Thierry Burnouf, PhD

Professor & Director, Graduate Institute of Biomedical Materials and Tissue Engineering, College of Biomedical Engineering, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan

Platelets are essential blood cells best known for their contribution to primary hemostasis. Since platelets store in their α-granules a myriad of potent molecules, including chemokines and growth factors (PDGF, TGF-b, BDNF, VEGF, EGF, HGF, IGF-1, etc.), they also play key roles in the mechanisms of wound healing and tissue regeneration. By interacting with other cells and tissues, platelet and their released microvesicles balance health and disease.

The objectives of this presentation are to overview the roles played by platelets and their derivatives (platelet lysates and microvesicles) in biomedical engineering as components of biomaterials for clinical use in regenerative medicine, growth medium supplement for in vitro cell expansion/cell therapy, and as novel drug delivery systems.
