演講摘要：Most biological (natural) materials are sophisticated composites whose mechanical properties are often outstanding, considering the weak constituents from which they are assembled. These biological composites, which have risen from hundreds of million years of evolution, are inspiring scientists and engineers in the design of novel materials. Their defining characteristics, self-assembly, structural hierarchy, multi-functionality, and self-healing capability, will be presented with selected biological materials investigated in our group. The Materials Science and Engineering approach is applied by correlating the structure with mechanical properties at varying hierarchical length scales. Finally, several novel approaches to synthesize bio-inspired/bio-mimetic composites will be discussed.
