Abstract:

Environmental pollution is one of the greatest challenges human
being is facing in the 21st century. We are also faced with concerns of climate
change, increased global demand on fossil fuels, national energy insecurity,
and continuous exploitation of limited natural resources. The traditional
approach of pollution control, which focuses on getting rid of pollutants from
a single medium, i.e. transformation of pollutants from liquid to solid or gas
and vice-versa, is no longer a desirable option. Therefore, for sustainability,
it becomes enormously important to direct research efforts that not only
alleviate environmental pollution, but also ease the stress on

depriving natural resources and growing energy insecurity.

This talk focuses on a new paradigm of examining an integrated
biorefinery concept to exploit the potential of biotechnology in recovering
bionergy, biofuels and other value-added products from waste biomass with
concomitant removal of pollutants. During bioprocessing, carbon, nitrogen,
hydrogen and sulfur from municipal, agricultural and industrial wastes can be converted
into valuable resources, e.g. bioenergy and biofuels (hydrogen, methane,
ethanol, butanol, and biodiesel), biofertilizer (biosolids and compost,
sulfur), chemicals (organic acids and solvents), animal feed (microbial
protein), nutraceuticals (ω-3 fatty acids,
β-carotene),
others

(polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), enzymes and biopesticides). This talk
will also cover some of the findings of the speaker
s research on resource recovery at Iowa State University and University
of Hawaii.
