Shale Gas:
The US Experience, The
World Outlook,
The Impacts on The
Global Chemical Industry, and
The Opportunities
for Chemical Engineering R&D.
The US shale gas has been heralded
as a game changer as it is revitalizing the heretofore stagnant US energy and
petrochemical industries. Although the
US had engaged in shale-gas drilling in 1821, it was not until the last decade,
however, when the production of shale gas skyrocketed due to the breakthroughs
of hydraulic fracturing, horizontal drilling, 3-D seismic, and microseismic
technologies. Inspired by the success of
the US shale-gas industry and the potential of significant economic benefits,
other countries are anxious to explore and develop their own shale-gas
resources. This presentation will
discuss the US shale-gas experience and exam the developments in other parts of
the world such as China. The
presentation will then address the impacts of shale gas on the global chemical
industry and the related opportunities for chemical engineering R&D.
