Manipulations
of Atom Transfer Radical Reactions toward Polymer Topology Control
Abstract. Atom transfer radical reactions, including atom transfer radical coupling
(ATRC) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), are robust tools for
the precise synthesis of homopolymers, block copolymers, star (co)polymers,
polymer brushes, hyperbranched polymers, and so forth. At first part, we propose
a strategy for radical recombination of methacrylic macro-radicals with the
assistance of styrene from mechanistic considerations. We then demonstrate an efficient
styrene-assisted ATRC approach and explore its effectiveness with the combination
of biodegradable poly(ε-caprolactone).
