The combination of escalating demand for crude oil and
approaching global maximum extraction, plus the need to manage greenhouse gas
emissions, make the development of sustainable energy sources critical. Renewable diesel/gasoline fuels are the transportation
fuels of future. Zheng’s group at UNB has carried out extensive studies on the
catalytic production of hydrocarbon green fuels from renewable resources
including waste cooking oil, sawdust and energy grass. This presentation
will introduce their research on hydrodeoxygenation of plant oils, biomass
conversion through thermochemical approach and upgrading of biomass-derived
oxygenates. The group is developing an integrated process to upgrade plant oil,
which process can significantly reduce the consumption of hydrogen gas and
produce high quality diesel fuels. A recently discovery of one-step biomass to
hydrocarbon liquid in hydrogenless environment will also briefly discussed.
