The
thermodynamic properties and phase behaviors of pure fluids and their mixtures
are very important in food, chemical, and pharmaceutical industry, especially
for the design and optimization of separation processes. For example, the
information regarding temperature, pressure, and composition in vapor-liquid equilibrium
(VLE) and liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) is crucial for the design of
distillation and extraction processes. The solubility of pharmaceuticals in
pure and mixture solvents are of great importance in design of purification processes
in pharmaceutical industry. It is straightforward and might be the most
reliable way to obtain the needed data directly from experimental measurement,
but a reliable predictive model can significantly reduce the time, cost, and
risk for problems involving extreme operation conditions and/or toxic
chemicals. Therefore, both approaches are equally important to obtain such
data. In my previous research, three different research topics are considered:
(a) development of first-principle thermodynamic model to predict a wide
variety of thermodynamic data for pure fluids and mixtures, (b) using molecular
simulation as a tool to generate theoretically-based data for the development
of thermodynamic model and to provide necessary VLE data, (c) measuring VLE
data at high pressure condition. All these three topics are briefly summarized
in this presentation.
